Let’s continue to the final 2 steps of using hooked framework for improving your YouTube viewer retention.

Step 3: Variable reward

Now that your subscribers have watched your video, what have they gained?

They came here expecting to find something interesting, call it out:

  • You analysed a product, pronounce your verdict.
  • You accepted a challenge, tell them the outcome
  • They wanted a news headline broken down, deliver that
  • You are running a give-away for the first few viewers, that should stir excitement

Ask yourself the reward your viewers are getting from each video — and whether they are going away satisfied. You will know this by your engagement metrics (likes, shares) and the feedback they give you (comments).

Constantly try to improve the reward your viewers get from engaging with you. Make sure that you also give a sneak peek of what is coming up in your next videos — this also serves as a reward if the content is to their liking.

Step 4: Investment

Make your subscribers do just a little bit of work and you have them coming for more. Give reasons and ask your subscribers to:

  • Like your video. Once they’ve liked your video they are more invested in your channel. They are more likely to click on your video the next time
  • Leave a comment. If they do and other users engage with it — their opinion is socially validated, they come back for more
  • Share your video. Doing that makes them your cheerleaders and they would have a positive bias towards your work. This creates a compounding effect

Having these 4 steps work for your channel will increase the likelihood of viewers staying and coming back to your channel again and again.
